Description

Demize Pour-On for Cattle

Active Ingredient:  Zeta-cypermethrin @ 25g/L

Demize Pour-On For Cattle is a fast and easy way to control all four major species of cattle biting and sucking lice, SP-susceptible buffalo flies and nuisance flies in a convenient, pour-on formulation.  Say goodbye to lice and flies.

Demize Pour-On is registered for the control of;

  • Biting and Sucking Cattle Lice (Bovicola bovis, Haematopinus eurysternus, Solenopotes capillatus and Linognathus vituli)
  • House fly (Musca domestica)
  • Stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans)
  • Buffalo fly (Synthetic Pyrethroid Susceptible) (Haematobia irritans exigua) on cattle.

Lice Control:

Demize controls all four of the major species of biting and sucking lice found in Australia. Field trials conducted throughout southern Australia have demonstrated that Demize provided equivalent or superior lice control compared to deltamethrin, the active ingredient in a commonly-used parasiticide. Demize eradicated Biting lice (B. bovis) in 5/5 trials and Short-nosed sucking lice (H. eurysternus) in 3/5 trials. Demize provided better control of Long-nosed sucking lice (Linognathus vituli) in 4/5 trials (P<0.1) and was significantly more effective than deltamethrin against Small blue sucking lice (Solenopotes capillatus) in 1/2 trials (P<0.05).

Nuisance Fly Control:

Demize protects cattle from irritation by significantly reducing the size of Stable fly and House fly populations. In one small pen study, Demize reduced the number of flies infesting treated cattle by more than 80% four days after application. A field efficacy trial demonstrated Demize was at least 89% effective seven days after treatment and at least 73% effective 11 days after treatment. By comparison, deltamethrin was at least 81% and 65% effective seven days and 11 days after treatment. Efficacy was calculated as the percentage reduction in fly numbers compared to fly numbers three days before treatment. Demize also provides excellent control of SP-susceptible populations of Buffalo fly. Field trials conducted in Queensland demonstrated Demize achieved more than 95% efficacy against Buffalo flies for three to 14 days after application, depending on the resistance status of the local fly population. Heavy rainfall occurring immediately after treatment had no adverse impact on efficacy.

How Demize Works:

Demize contains 25 g/L of the active ingredient, zeta-cypermethrin, which belongs to the synthetic pyrethroid class of insecticides. Synthetic pyrethroids are structural analogues of natural compounds derived from the pyrethrum daisy, Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium. SP compounds kill parasites by interfering with the nervous system, leading to tremors, inability to feed and ultimately death. Zeta-cypermethrin has a higher proportion of the biologically-active “S-isomers” and a lower proportion of the relatively-inactive “R-isomers” than cypermethrin.

Elanco discontinued Demize in late 2021 as they could not source some of the active ingredients required to manufacture the product. If the components become available again in the future, they plan to manufacture Demize again.

For alternative products for lice and fly control in cattle, we suggest looking at Coopers Easy-Dose Pour-On Cattle Lice & Fly Treatment & Brute Pour-On. Various 'mectin' pour-on drenches will also provide short term control for lice and fly in cattle.

Tips For Use

Application:

  • Restrain cattle in a race or crush during application.
  • Pour product evenly along the backline from the poll to the base of the tail.
  • Do not apply as a single spot or to areas of the skin that have pre-existing lesions.
  • Do not re-treat animals within three weeks.
  • Always read the label directions before use.
  • As this product may cause skin irritation it is recommended that it be used with care on lactating dairy cows as animals may kick whist in the dairy for up to 72 hours after treatment.
  • It is good agricultural practice not to treat animals when they are wet or if rain is likely.

Zeta-cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid. Synthetic pyrethroids may cause skin irritation. In herds that react, a large proportion of the herd may be involved. Signs may include increased body movements, arching of the back, stamping and increased tail swishing. Occasionally an increase in salivation and tear formation may occur. These signs may be more severe in lactating dairy cows as they may also kick whist being milked in the dairy. The product should be used with care. If present, signs usually disappear within 72 hours

Retreatment Interval:

  • Animals should not be retreated within three weeks.

Rainfastness:

  • Moderate rainfall occurring immediately after application has no adverse impact on the efficacy of the product, although it is good agricultural practice to not treat animals when they are wet or if rain is likely.
